The small Samsung T7 solid-state drives in some ways are ideal for video editing. They are small and fast. However, when it comes to moving large files to, from or between them they are a pain. Those not in the know think they have failed or are failing fast when progress slows to such a crawl that the projected time for a simple transfer extends to hours. The problem is that they overheat and slow down their own speed in order not to melt into a blob of mixed alloy. The answer to that problem is a heatsink with both a large heat capacity and high conductivity to dissipate the heat. Air cooling over a larger surface area can then occurs efficiently.
I keep my Final Cut Pro Library on an SSD for editing. All assets are stored there. This is not heavy use of the SSD and I simply lie the unit on an aluminium plate 150 x 150 x 2 mm. However, when I need to add another SSD to copy or transfer a large file (an FCP Library for example) I lie them both on the sheet and then add an aluminium heat sink designed to cool electronic components. That setup prevents overheating and file transfer is fast. No glueing or attachment with sticky pads is necessary.
Both the aluminium plate (£12.98) and the two heatsinks (“2 Pcs 60 x 60 x10 mm Heatsink Kit…”)(£8.79 for 2) were from Amazon UK.
Using heatsinks to fix the Samsung T7 overheating problem is not new but it seems there are lots of people who have not heard of the solution.
